Local fruit wine company opens new Hillcrest tasting room

Several tipsters have told us about some changes to the Vinavanti Urban Winery tasting room, which opened in Hillcrest last fall. Earlier this month, the local winery sold their newly built winery and tasting space on University Avenue to their friends at The California Fruit Wine Co.and will take a short break before announcing the reopening of Vinavanti in a new location.

Twin brothers Brian and Alan Haghighi founded The California Fruit Wine Co. in 2009, running a small operation at fairs and farmers’ markets before opening its first tasting room and production facility in Vista in 2011. By 2014, the business had taken off , thanks in part to a major commitment from Whole Foods Market, and the wines are now produced in a large factory in Carlsbad.

In the new Hillcrest Tasting Room, the company will offer tasting flights, glasses and growler refills of its wine, made with fermented fruit juices with no artificial flavors or added colors. Its range includes pomegranate, pineapple, sangria blends and seasonal versions, including pumpkin spice, and they are able to modify the fermentation process to create a variety of styles, from dry to sparkling and sweet. , in each flavor.

The on-site winemaking system will be used to create a monthly rotating wine list using local fruit and a new barrel program will allow the winery to accelerate its distribution of sparkling wine to bars and restaurants.

Now open Wednesday through Sunday, The California Fruit Wine Co. serves a light menu of tapas and small plates.
