Miller Family Wine Company Collaborates With Joey Tensley To Launch Optik Wines

May 4, 2021, Santa Maria, California – Miller Family Wine Company, a division of the industry-leading Thornhill Companies, is delighted to announce the launch of optik, a new brand featuring a collection of vineyard wines from Bien Nacido Vineyard, produced by renowned Santa Barbara winemaker Joey Tensley.

Although Nacido Vineyard, planted in 1973 by brothers Bob and Steve Miller, is widely recognized as one of California’s most iconic wineries, long revered for producing exceptional wines that embody the distinct characteristics of the Santa Maria Valley AVA. Seeking to honor this heritage while revealing the particular qualities of the vineyard through a new and unique lens, the Miller family partnered with Tensley to create optik, a brand designed to present a new vision of the Bien Nacido vineyard.

Throughout his career, eminent winemaker Tensley has built a reputation for preserving the best vineyard characteristics by minimizing winemaker handling and oak processing – a signature style that has earned him over 200 notes and 90 + in the most reputable publications in the wine industry, including six wines on the prestigious Top 100 list of Wine Spectator. By crossing Tensley’s masterful approach with the elegant force of Bien Nacido fruit, optik aims to open our eyes to the new possibilities of this long established vineyard.

“For nearly 50 years, our family has continued the legacy of Bien Nacido as one of California’s most respected wineries, and we are incredibly proud to be the stewards of this land,” said Nicholas Miller, vice-president. president of sales and marketing. “That said, we’re always looking for ways to showcase the diversity and complexity of Bien Nacido and present it to new consumers in new ways. By collaborating with Joey – a talented winemaker whom we have always held in very high regard – we knew we could present a different slice of Bien Nacido in an unexpected way.

“I have always believed that the most important part of my role as a winemaker was to let the vineyard and the unique qualities of the fruit shine through in the wine,” says Tensley. “In order to underline the particular characteristics of Bien Nacido, a special place that produces exceptional fruit, I make sure to use a softer approach in the cellar, trying to let the terroir be the star. And working with individual blocks across the vineyard allows me to showcase the diversity of the site, which translates into wines with a real sense of identity.

The optik portfolio includes vineyard-nominated wines from unique blocks on the estate, with six wines in small batches spread across three varietals: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah – priced between $ 35 and $ 45. Representing the power of new perspectives, the unique and contemporary optik packaging symbolizes the ability of the winemaker’s hand to convey what his eye sees. “Our label is designed to bring the optik concept to life, visually representing a new interpretation of the Bien Nacido vineyard through the lens of an incredibly accomplished stranger watching,” says Tommy Gaeta, Director of Marketing. “It offers a deeper level of storytelling than one might not expect from wines typically produced from Bien Nacido, while the prices make them accessible to a large audience of aspiring and established wine lovers. . “

Optik wines will be available at select fine wine retailers and restaurants in cities across the country and online at
