Studio Other Spaces, founded by artist Olafur Eliasson and architect Sebastian Behmann, envisioned a wine-tasting pavilion for California winemaker The Donum Estate that weaves various elements of the site into what the designers describe as a panorama vertical. The project essentializes a vertical cut through the landscape and conditions that make a thriving vineyard, offering a holistic experience that addresses all the senses. The roof’s colored glass tiles represent an abstract calendar describing the annual averages of parameters such as wind intensity, temperature and humidity.

Located on a hill, the project will offer a panoramic view of the landscape and a new point of view to contemplate the collection of open-air sculptures of the Estate. The gravel path leading to the pavilion is cut into the slope and lined with glazed bricks which bring an added element of movement to the experience. Upon reaching the pavilion, the wall grows to eye level, aligning the ground and turf with visitors. The design aims to create a heightened awareness of the surrounding environment, ground, sky and unfolding panorama.

Our design for the pavilion focuses on the experience of tasting wine and, simultaneously, the experience of the land where the grapes were grown and the wine was produced. Inspired by the Donum Estate vineyard, we incorporated the natural elements into the structure – the soil, the vegetation, the wind, the sun, the atmosphere, the rain and even the time it takes for the vines to grow for the next season. We hope the new pavilion will provide visitors with a holistic experience – an encounter between the senses and the environment. – Sebastian Behmann, co-founder of Studio Other Spaces

The pavilion will be an important addition to the estate, which also includes a visitor center and conservation space housing Louise Bourgeois’ artwork, Crouching Spider. Donum Estate is also home to one of the largest accessible private sculpture collections in the world, with 50 works of art, including outdoor sculptures created by artists such as Ai Weiwei, Ghada Amer, Doug Aitken, Lynda Benglis, Keith Haring and Subodh Gupta.
