The Michelin Guide announces the BEST restaurants in Moscow

The prestigious French gastronomic guide Michelin has selected 69 restaurants in Moscow, 9 of which received its coveted stars

“Moscow has a lot of stars, but not yet Michelin stars,” joked Sergei Sobyanin, the city’s mayor, at the opening ceremony of the Michelin Moscow edition. The capital has great historical gastronomic roots. Merchants and nobles deposited their last ruble to treat guests with dignity. In Soviet times, many traditions were lost, and first-class restaurants turned into Soviet canteens. In the 1990s, Russia and Moscow began to catch up, and hundreds of fine restaurants appeared that surprised customers with the sophistication of their dishes.

Moscow became the first city in the CIS with restaurants and cafes awarded stars and other Michelin trophies, while Russia became the 33rd country in the world to join.

Why is the guide coming Russia now?

According to Gwendal Poullennec, international director of Michelin guides, work on the Moscow guide began five years ago. The Guide’s experts visited the restaurants anonymously and evaluated them according to international standards, analyzing several criteria: quality of the food, combination of flavors, competence of the chef, price and quality, regularity of the restaurant’s work. The pandemic has made a difference in the assessment process and the announcement of results.

“This project has been a challenge for all of us due to the pandemic, travel restrictions and event cancellations. But, we did it at the end. We are happy to say that Moscow, as one of the cities of gastronomic tourism, has great prospects in terms of development. The city certainly has its own culinary identity; many chefs work with local products while carefully preserving the culinary heritage of their region. The first edition of Moscow will include 69 restaurants, ”said Gwendal Pullenek during the guide’s presentation in Moscow on October 14. According to him, this is just the start, which should support the restaurant industry.

Two stars: the best of the best

Two restaurants in Moscow received two Michelin stars. The price means the restaurant is so good it’s worth a visit, even if it isn’t on your street (or doesn’t fit your budget!).

Two stars went to the restaurant “Twins Garden”, run by brothers Ivan and Sergey Berezutsky. Twins Garden has won numerous international awards and in October it was ranked 30th on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. The brothers promote the symbiosis of science and nature and most of the restaurant’s products come from their farm.

The second restaurant in this category was ‘ARTEST – Chef’s Table’, a new gourmet restaurant (open since February 2021) by chef Artem Yestafiev and restaurateur Arkady Novikov.

Estafiev recently moved to Moscow from St. Petersburg, but has already managed to woo Muscovite audiences with his approach to gastronomy. The chef pays special attention to local products, uses wild and rare mushrooms. Before joining ARTEST, he trained at the restaurant of French chef Alain Ducasse, whose establishments have been awarded several Michelin stars.


One star: it’s worth the detour!

Seven restaurants in the capital have been awarded a Michelin star.

Among them:

– ‘Selfie’, a signature cuisine restaurant run by chef Anatoly Kazakov (one of the top 100 chefs in the international ranking of ‘The Best Chef Awards 2021’);

– The “Beluga” restaurant of Russian specialties, where you can taste two dozen kinds of caviar, enjoy the breathtaking view of Red Square and savor the explosive menu of chef Evgeny Vikentyev;

– Restaurant and cellar ‘Grand Cru’ by Patriarch’s Ponds with David Emmerle at the helm;

– Restaurant ‘White Rabbit’ in the center of Moscow with chef Vladimir Mukhin and his innovative approach to Russian cuisine (n ° 25 in the ranking ‘The World’s Best 50 Restaurants’);

Green stars

The Michelin Guide awards this prize to restaurants concerned with conscious consumption, reducing food waste and taking seasonality into account. The restaurants Biologie (chef – Ekaterina Alekhina), Twins Garden (Berezutsky brothers) and the northern cuisine restaurant ‘Bjorn’ (Nikita Poderyagin) in Moscow have all received a Michelin green star.

Good food for a reasonable price

Fifteen restaurants are on the BIB Gourmand list, where you can enjoy a delicious meal for 2,000 rubles (around $ 28). Among them are ‘Sevicheria’, ‘Delicatessen’, ‘Bjorn’, ‘Eva’, ‘Erwin.RekaMoreOkean’, ‘Flor’, ‘Geraldine’, ‘Hibiki’, ‘Kazbek’, ‘Lucky Izakaya bar’, ‘Rybtorg’ , ‘Tilda’, ‘Ugolek’, ‘Vani’ and ‘Uilliams’.

45 other restaurants were also included in the list of recommendations in the Michelin Guide.
