Virtual Wine Tasting Celebrating Women in Wine from Croatia and the United States

Women of Wine 2022: Croatia and USA

To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago, Croatian Premium Wine Imports, Inc.and EventLab.hr organized this Sunday a virtual tasting of three Croatian wines produced by three women winegrowers.

Demonstrating the quality of Croatian winemaking and the role wine plays in Croatian culture, the wines were tasted by three American wine professionals. The nine women have shown impressive journeys in their respective degrees and experiences, from business and oenology to WSET certification, wine evaluation, education and sommeliers.

The event was opened by Sanja Laković, Consul General of the Republic of Croatia in Chicago, who explained the long history of viticulture in Croatia and said that “even during the pandemic, wine has found a way in events like this to connect people. Wine has a big impact on the Croatian economy, I am happy to say that today we find an increasing number of women in the Croatian wine industry.

Mirena Bagur, co-founder of Croatian premium wine, online store with over 70 Croatian wines shipped to the United States, moderated the event and provided insight into Croatia, its wine regions and native varieties. She encouraged everyone to pay tribute to Ukrainians and raise a glass for peace, which immediately elicited a response from the audience, including a comment from Carol Ann Gartner “Yes, a toast for peace. Hvala for recognizing Ukraine.

Croatian winemakers and American tasters

Participating winemakers included Jasna Antunović-Turk, owner/winemaker of Antunovic Vina, Dalj, Slavonia; Eva Kristof, Wine Production Manager, Dubrovacki Podrumi, Konavle; and Gorana Dominikovic, assistant winemaker at Terra Madre Cellar, Komarna Appellation. While winemakers commented on their decisions to work in the wine industry, their American colleagues focused on tasting notes and conversations about Croatian wine in the United States. Ksenija Matić, based in Dubrovnik, is a wine judge, sommelier and co-founder of Eventlab.hr, a Dubrovnik-based company focused on organizing concerts and events, and she also teaches a wine course from been at the Rochester Institute of Technology Dubrovnik Campus. Ksenija presented the tasting notes of the first wine, Tango with life, Antunovic Vinaa non-vintage red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, applauding its freshness and liveliness.

The second red wine was Zinfandel, which originated in Croatia as Crljenak or Tribidrag. Luciana Braz, a Seattle, Washington-based engineer by training and wine enthusiast with WSET diploma-approved entry status, who created a Winetalk Alexa skill for audio, is an international wine watcher who has visited more than 100 appellations around the world. Luciana tasted Zinfandel/Crljenak 2016, Dubrovacki Podrumi stating the wine is smooth and a great choice to bring to a party where everyone will love it.

Explaining the benefits of pouring wine one glass at a time while preserving one bottle, demonstrating how to use the Coravin Pivot, Mirena featured Lindsay Buck, WSET3, and a manager from Coravin markets. Lindsay explained the company’s offering, including the Timeless device and an explanation of their market, including the Wine merchant Coravina selection of wines to inspire exploration for novices and long-time wine lovers, where she included three wines from Croatia.

The last wine and the strongest red wine was Plavac Mali Premium 2016, Terra Madre Cellar, who received a Decanter Silver from the London-based awards. American Wine Society wine judge and Cornell director of education and winemaker Annemarie L. Morse described the wine as robust for food pairing.
