Where to do a wine tasting in Napa and the Bay Area, fall 2021

777 Madrone Road, Glen Ellen

A modern experience, with crafts, pétanque and refreshing sips, surrounded by historic vineyards.

Abbot’s Passage owner Katie Bundschu is perhaps best known for her association with her family’s winery, Gundlach Bundschu, one of the most popular stops for wine tourists in the region. Still, its own space comes close to the platonic ideal of a Wine Country tasting room, with comfortable, private lounges and pétanque courts dotted around an 80-year-old vineyard. In 2020, after several years of operating a small tasting room for Abbot’s Passage in downtown Sonoma plaza, Bundschu purchased this spacious winery from Glen Ellen, which was once occupied by Valley of the Moon Winery. , and added a retail store with clothing and home decor items, focused on female producers. It is rare in a tasting room to have such a close and personal view of historic vines like these. Among the highlights of the flight is the Sightline, a crisp white made mostly of Chenin Blanc and Verdejo, which tastes like a fresh, juicy pear. A little surprise awaits you at the end of the flight: a light cocktail made with white wine, sparkling water and fruit shrubs. Served chilled in a Nick and Nora glass, it’s a great palate cleanser for your next wine tasting.
